Low Metabolism Symptoms

Metabolism is the method and rate of energy production in the body that is controlled by enzymes and hormones. Low metabolism is a reduction in the rate of energy production and is typically caused by hypothyroidism, although it also can be caused by enzyme deficiencies.

Low metabolism is frequently marked by a weight gain that cannot be explained by changes in lifestyle or diet.


Muscles and Joints


Low metabolism is often indicated by changes to the muscles that may include weakness, stiffness and aches. Similar problems can afflict the joints.


Fatigue


It is common for a person with low metabolism to feel sluggish, tired or fatigued. This may also be accompanied by feelings of depression.


Appearance


The health of a person's appearance can be affected by low metabolism. The complexion may be pale, the hair brittle and the face puffy.








Menstruation


In addition to the other symptoms, women who have hypothyroidism-induced low metabolism can experience very heavy menstruation.


Myxedema


According to the Mayo Clinic, myxedema, the advanced form of hypothyroidism, can affect autonomic (automatic) functions such as breathing or blood pressure. It may lead to a coma or even be deadly.
