Filling a Prescription
CVS and Caremark offer more than 62,000 pharmacies in which prescriptions can be filled. The most important component is to have a benefit ID card on hand when filling a prescription. Co-pays vary depending on the health insurance plan, and will be collected by the pharmacist upon order. However, if the Benefit ID is not available, then most prescriptions and receipts will need to be sent in for reimbursement. Mail-in Orders via Caremark
The Caremark program includes a mail service, which can be a convenient option for patients. Most insurance plans allow doctors to write 90-day fill prescriptions to be sent directly to a location of choice. Registration is a one-time mail in order form. Thereafter, patients can speak to registered pharmacists via phone or online and also track refills and prescriptions online. Shipping is also free.
Most prescriptions arrive within 10 to 14 calendar dies after orders are placed. If second day or overnight shipping is necessary, then patients will have to pay for the difference.
Time and Money Saving Tips
One of the key ways to save on medications is by switching to a generic brand vs. brand name, if it is available. The cost difference can vary anywhere from 30 to 80 percent. Most plans will offer a preferred and covered drugs list and have it available on their website or upon request. Having the list handy and bringing the list to the doctor's office can save both time and money, allowing doctor's to prescribe accordingly.
