Homemade Glycerine Spray

Homemade Glycerine Spray

Glycerin has a softening effect on skin when it is diluted with water. It also dissolves well in alcohol, making it easy to incorporate into body sprays. But pure glycerin dehydrates, pulling moisture out of anything with which it comes into contact. For this reason, it is important to use the product properly.

General Information

Homemade glycerin sprays can be made from common items you can find in your home, including citrus fruits, colognes and perfumes, essential oils and water. Because glycerin does not bind with oil-based products, though, it is best to stick with ingredients that achieve the same outcome. An advantage of homemade glycerin spray is that you can control the type and amount of fragrance and the spray's ingredients, size and packaging.

Body sprays often contain alcohol for its astringent properties. Pure vodka or witch hazel are good choices for this purpose.

Glycerin Sprays

For an easy glycerin body spray, mix 1 tbsp. natural food extract with 1 tsp. glycerin and 4 oz. purified water. Add color by putting a few drops of water-based food coloring into the mixture.

The Ecoholistic website recommends glycerin body sprays for aromatherapy purposes. Mix 4 oz distilled water, 1 tbsp. vodka, 1 tsp. glycerin and 1 tbsp. grated peel from one or more citrus fruits. Seal the mixture in a light-resistant container and let sit for two to three weeks. Strain out the citrus peel before pouring the liquid into a spray bottle.

Soap-making supplier Snowdrift Farm in Tucson, Arizona, proposes adding ¾ tsp. glycerin to a homemade essential-oil spray for skin softening.

Make a soothing cucumber skin spray by combining 1 tbsp. cucumber juice with 1 tbsp. witch hazel and 1 tsp. glycerin.

Make a floral glycerin spray by pulverizing flower petals of your choice and soaking them in water for a few weeks in a light-resistant container. Once the mixture has reached the scent level desired, strain the petals from the liquid and add 4 oz. alcohol and 2 tsp. glycerin.

Missouri-based Montieau Saddle Club suggests mixing 1 cup mineral oil, ¼ cup citrus juice, 1 tsp. citronella oil, 1 tsp. citrus detergent and 1½ tsp. glycerin for an effective spray to keep insects away.
