Although it may sound strange, there are people who suffer from noise anxiety. Certain noises can produce symptoms of anxiety in people who are sensitive to noise. Following are a few ways to detect if someone may suffer from noise anxiety.

1. Observe a person's reaction to music. Does the person get nervous, jittery or anxious when loud music is playing? Is the person more relaxed when the music is turned down?


2. Watch a person's reaction to loud voices. Does he tend to associate loud voices with arguments? Does the person become tense or anxious when people talk loudly or several people are talking at once?


3. Observe the person's level of concentration in a noisy work environment such as construction or where loud machinery is being used. Does the person have difficulty focusing on the task at hand in a noisy environment yet she can function perfectly well in an area with limited noise?


4. Look for mood swings or personality changes to detect noise anxiety. A person who suffers from noise anxiety may be perfectly calm in a quiet environment then suddenly become tense or irritable when noise begins to fill the air.


5. Learn to recognize triggers if you or someone you know suffers from noise anxiety. A trigger is something that causes the anxiety. Triggers may include a certain type of music, people arguing, a dog barking, a clock alarm, car alarm, sirens, traffic and other sounds. Once you recognize what triggers noise anxiety, you can take steps to minimize those particular triggers that produce emotions of anxiety.
