Acupressure For Diabetes

Acupressure has been discovered as one way to control diabetes. It is accomplished through certain pressure points on the body. In some cases, it has been noted how symptoms of diabetes have improved or been cured altogether. In ancient Chinese medicinal philosophies such as acupressure, it is believed negativity in health is due to an interruption in "chi" or positive energy flow. Once chi is restored through acupressure, improved and optimal health can be achieved.


Types of Diabetes


Type 1 Diabetes requires insulin or medication to control blood sugar levels. Type 2 Diabetes, often known as Adult Onset Diabetes, can be a result of stress, inadequate exercise, poor diet and excess weight gain.


Symptoms of both types of diabetes can be exacerbated from stress. Stress in turn can be reduced through acupressure, which can alleviate symptoms of diabetes.


Acupuncture and Stress


Massage Magazine discussed a study performed at New Mexico State University's School of Social Work, which focused on the correlation between stress and diabetes within a group of Mexican Americans struggling with diabetes. The study analyzed whether reduced stress levels would help the participants' cases of diabetes. Over a 6-week period, participants would go once weekly for a "15 minute stress out," which consisted of a combination of acupressure on various points of the body and breathing exercises.


Reduced Stress Means Reduced Blood Sugar


At the end of the study, many patients noted their blood sugar had reduced, as did their anxiety levels, work-related stress and anger (see Resources).


Healthy Lifestyle


Dr. Mark Brinson, a doctor of Oriental Medicine, believes diabetes can be managed with a routine of exercise, diet (consisting of a good eating schedule balanced with proteins, carbohydrates and minimal simple sugars), and acupressure.


Acupressure Tips


According to Dr. Brinson, there are three acupressure points that help manage diabetes symptoms. The first point, known as Chihi, is just below the belly button and helps the body to better metabolize food. Stomach 36 and Spleen 6 are two points that help aid digestion. Stomach 36 is slightly below the knee and Spleen 6 is above the ankle.








Dr. Brinson attributes these acupressure points, working in unison with proper diet and exercise, as a way to ultimately improve metabolism and insulin levels.
