Sinus headaches are often the result of sinusitis, which may come from allergies or infections. Sinus headache can be treated naturally, including using steam, aromatherapy or heat, and drinking liquids.
Using Steam
Steam helps to open up your sinuses, which allows congestion and blockages to drain. Once your sinuses have drained, the pain of your sinus headache will diminish. Several ways are available to use steam to help your sinus headache, including using your shower. Shut your bathroom door, and turn your shower on, using no cold water. Sit or stand outside of the shower, breathing in the steam. Alternatively, you can fill your sink with 2 or 3 inches of hot water. Lean over the sink, and cover your head with a towel, draping the sides to create a tent over the sink to keep the steam in.
Aromatherapy
Using essential oils in your steam treatments will help to relieve your sinus pressure even more. Several different essential oils can be added to the water, when you create steam for a sinus treatment. Eucalyptus, peppermint and rosemary oils all will add aromatherapy benefits to the steam you are breathing.
Applying Moist Heat
Moist heat can also be applied directly to your face to help ease the symptoms of a sinus headache. You can wet a washcloth with very warm water, and hold it against the areas of your face where you feel sinus pressure. Typically, sinus pain is felt behind your eyes, or in the teeth, but you can also feel pain all over your face.
Drinking Liquids
Drinking lots of liquids will help to keep you hydrated, so that your body has the fluids it needs to be able to create the thin mucus that flows and drains easily in your sinuses. Avoid drinking coffee, tea, or other caffeinated beverages because the caffeine is a diuretic and can cause you to lose more fluids than you drink.
