Soothe A Shingles Flareup

You thought that having chicken pox when you were a child was bad. Now you have angry, red blisters and a lot of pain--you have shingles. The pain and tenderness is wreaking havoc on your body and emotions, and even after the blisters heal, you still have pain. Here are some helpful tips to help deal with the effects of this virus and help your body heal.

Instructions

1. Treat it early. At the onset of shingles, take some Tylenol. It won't upset your stomach like aspirin and will help with the pain. Take extra doses of Vitamin C to help boost your immune system and help fight the virus. Take a multi-vitamin with zinc and Vitamin B complex. Lysine is also helpful for stopping the spread of the virus, limiting the area of painful blisters.

2. Don't pick. Leave the blisters alone. Don't apply fancy creams and topical ointments. This can irritate the skin and allow the virus to spread.

3. Do try a calamine paste. Calamine lotion, isopropyl alcohol and one percent each of phenol and menthol can help stop the itch and dry up the blisters. You can also try an aspirin paste. Mix aspirin and water and apply to the blisters. This can help give pain relief that will often last for hours.

4. Stay cool. Heat will only make the pain worse, so keep cool. Apply cool wet cloths to the blisters and you can even try the cornstarch/oatmeal cool bath to help cool and soothe the shingles blisters.

5. After the blisters have gone, you may still have nerve pain. Apply ice on the areas with pain. The cold may confuse the nerve endings and give some periodic relief.
