Information On Roswell Cancer Center

Founded in 1898, Roswell Cancer Center was the first comprehensive cancer center in the United States. Now called the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the center has the distinction of being a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, a group of 21 hospitals that specialize in the care of cancer patients and the furtherance of cancer research.


Location


Roswell Cancer Center is located in Buffalo, New York, which is situated near Lake Erie in the eastern portion of the state.


Size


Roswell Cancer Center's campus is located on 29 acres of grounds. The total square footage of its buildings is over 1.6 million square feet, and the center complex consists of 12 major buildings.


History


The Roswell Cancer Center is known for launching the first chemotherapy research program in the world in 1904.


Patients


The Roswell Cancer Center had over 185,000 outpatient visits in 2008 and had nearly 27,000 patients under active care. A Doubletree hotel is located on the campus to house families of patients receiving care at the center.


Research


Roswell Cancer Center has research departments performing work on new cancer drugs and vaccines, DNA research and experimental treatments, with an entire team researching prostate cancer causes, cures and prevention.
