Ingredients To Avoid In Toothpaste

Ingredients to Avoid in Toothpaste

Over the past 50 years, more than 11,000 chemical additives have been developed for use in personal hygiene products, 90 percent of which have not been established as safe for use by humans. Toothpaste manufacturers are required to print warnings on their labels against allowing its use by children under 6 years of age and advising that if the toothpaste is accidentally swallowed, to seek immediate attention at a Poison Control Center.

Titanium Dioxide

Titanium dioxide is a whitening agent found in many toothpastes. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified titanium dioxide as a Group 2B carcinogen.

Parabens

Ethylparaben, Methylparaben, Butylparaben and Propylparaben are used as preservatives in many toothpastes (and many other personal hygiene products). The paraben family of chemicals has been shown to disrupt the endocrine system, the network of glands in the body that regulate growth and sexual development through the release of hormones. Parabens have also been known to trigger contact dermatitis and are believed to increase the risk of breast cancer.

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate

This ingredient is often listed as "SLS," or sodium laureth sulphate or simply "sulfate" and is used for the lathering effect it produces. It can also be found in engine degreasers and garage floor cleaners. It is known to be toxic to the human liver and kidneys, cause ulcers in the mouth and trigger outbreaks of eczema and other skin conditions. It is also poisonous to fish.

Triclosan

Triclosan is an antibacterial agent found in mouthwash as well as toothpaste (and many other household and personal care products). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has registered it as a pesticide that is toxic to humans and the environment. When it comes into contact with the chlorine in tap water, a chemical reaction takes place turning it into chloroform, a highly toxic and carcinogenic chemical.

FD&C Blue Dye No. 1 & No. 2

These artificial colorings are synthesized from petroleum and have been known to trigger severe allergic reactions, asthma attacks and headaches in addition to being carcinogens that interfere with brain function. Even though toothpaste is not swallowed, the absorption efficiency of the mucous membrane in the mouth is over 90 percent so these chemicals find their way into the bloodstream.
