Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy consists of a plethora of different techniques. Good therapists get to know their clients' psychological problems and adjust the therapy according to what breaks down their clients' resistance and provide insight in order to make the changes necessary for them to get well. A psychotherapist uses different techniques on certain clients like a mechanic would use certain tools to get a particular job completed.

Function

Psychotherapy is a form of counseling used to help people with mental illness overcome their stumbling blocks and eventually get well. One psychotherapy session is not enough from which to benefit; at least five sessions are needed for any noticeable changes. In order to benefit from psychotherapy, you have to be able to open up and spill it all out to your psychotherapist, or else little will change.

Time Frame

Although there is no set time for a "cure," an average of 20 sessions is necessary to deal with phobias, obsessions, social and sexual anxieties, and panic disorders. If psychotherapy is not working by this stage, other techniques such as medications and behavior therapy may be used.

Behavior

Behavior therapy is part of psychotherapy and it involves exercises to be performed in the office and at home. Exercises may involve breathing, relaxation and visualization. Phobias and fears may be gradually faced to enable the client to be free of the elements that are preventing him from moving forward with his life.

Identification

Feeling depressed is easier than actually facing the real reasons why you cannot function normally in your life. Psychotherapy uncovers the real reasons for the depression and lifts the burden from the shoulders of the sufferer, making him face problems and thus function in a normal fashion.

Types

Psychotherapy is working when you find you are able to get out of bed in the morning and function without feeling lethargic. You will no longer feel insane, but rather normal and evenly balanced, even happy. Feelings that you were trying so hard to avoid feeling are suddenly being felt and they are okay. You have finally, after many psychotherapy sessions, gained much-needed insight about your life and are facing the problems that were preventing you from moving forward in life.
