Security Response Procedures For A Medical Incident

Security staff provide assistance in medical emergencies.

When Anna Nicole Smith was found unresponsive in her Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino room in Hollywood, Florida, on Feb. 8, 2007--the day of her tragic death--hotel security sprung into action. As security staff does with every medical incident that happens on hotel property, they responded to Smith's incident following a standard set of security responses.

Dispense Emergency First Aid

The Center for Excellence in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance safety and procedures section of its CARE guide states that personnel trained to dispense first aid should be on a security staff. Security staff must have an efficient voice communication system in place. Security staff are immediately alerted to quickly respond to medical incidences and trained to administer first aid.

Contact Medical Responders

Once security responders assess the situation, they are required to quickly contact the appropriate medical responders. Local paramedics received the call about an unresponsive Anna Nicole and quickly responded. If someone were to experience a heart attack at a hotel, the security staff alert the nearest emergency medical responder and remain available to offer emergency aid until the medical unit arrives.

Have Adequate Security Staff Available

Whether it be a medical incident involving one person, or several, adequate security must be available to respond. Of the 166 deaths in the Mabai terrorists attacks in 2008, several were the result of hotel security personnel and other heroic hotel employees sacrificing themselves to get other hotel employees and guests out safely. High ranking law enforcement officers, including the head of the anti-terrorist squad and a commissioner of police were killed. Many of the security personnel were called in to help handle the crises. Adequate security personnel must be on staff or on call to handle medical incidents.

Fill Out Medical Incident Paperwork

Security personnel must fill out appropriate paperwork for medical incidents. Details include the type of medical incident, time of the incident, name or names of those involved, who dispensed emergency aid, and what type of medical aid was dispensed. A hotel patron who suffers a medical incident on the property can request a copy of the medical incident from the risk management or security department.
