Prevent Influenza Virus







The influenza or flu virus affects the respiratory system and is a contagious disease. The flu can present itself in a mild or severe form, sometimes causing death. The Centers for Disease Control recommend individuals get a yearly flu vaccination to help prevent and control the flu symptoms. Preventing the spread of the flu virus is possible understanding some facts about the virus and protect yourself.


Instructions








1. Learn the symptoms of the flu virus. Common symptoms include fever, chills, muscle or body aches, runny or stuffy nose, and fatigue. The virus spreads through droplets released through sneezing, talking or coughing. Sometimes the virus spreads through surfaces when germs are picked up by touching a surface and then the person's mouth, nose or eyes.


2. Learn who is at a higher risk of complications when they get the virus. Overall, children under the age of five, adults over the age of 65, pregnant women, and those with medical conditions are at risk. If you fall into any of these categories, take extra precaution during flu season.


3. Prevent the spread of the flu by washing your hands many times throughout the day using soap and water. Wash especially after sneezing or coughing into your hands. Cover your mouth with a tissue or your arm when sneezing or coughing to prevent the spread of germs. Avoid close contact with individuals who are sick or have the flu. If you contract the flu, drink plenty of fluids and stay home in bed resting for at least 24 hours.
