Start A Small Day Spa Business

Hot stone massage

With our busy schedules, we're always looking for ways to relax and recharge. One of the best ways to achieve this is by visiting a local day spa. Here, you can get a massage, soak in a hot tub and get a makeover, leaving you feeling calm and refreshed by the end of the day. With so many people in need of these services, starting your own day spa business is a great opportunity for the new entrepreneur. Many people don't have the time to visit spas in faraway cities and are looking for locations close to home. Opening a small spa can be profitable and fun, and is actually fairly simple. You'll need some basic training and equipment as well as a bit of patience in order to be successful.

Instructions

1. Decide which services you will offer. Basic offerings should include massage, hot tubs, saunas or steam rooms, and hair, nail and skin care.

2. Consider offering specialty services to draw clients to your spa. These can include acupuncture, aromatherapy, hot stone massage, waxing and other specialty concepts.

3. Learn massage. One of the most common spa services is the classic massage, though many other variations exist and can be offered based on demand. Even if you plan to hire a masseuse, it can be helpful to be certified yourself so you can always have a qualified person on staff.

4. Hire staff who specialize in the services you'd like to offer, including massage therapists, stylists and support staff. Look for people who can competently perform these services, who are licensed as required by local law, and who can provide excellent customer service to keep your guests coming back.

5. Obtain all required licenses. This includes a basic business license from your local state department as well as any specialty licenses associated with spas, massage or skin care.

6. Find a location that will be convenient for your customers. Decide whether you'll need to provide parking or be near public transportation. Consider leasing a space before buying just in case it isn't a profitable area and you need to move.

7. Purchase basic equipment. You'll need massage tables, hot tubs, saunas and other items depending on services offered.
