What Is the Meaning of the Gemstone Ruby?
"Ruby" derives from the Latin "rubens"/"ruber" which means "red." The universally acknowledged synonym for ruby is "red" gemstone, even though there are also rubies in shades of pink and purplish-red. Rubies were apparently first worn in the breastplates of high priests centuries ago. They have never lost their place as precious jewels that are considered to have historical significance, potent physical properties and monetary value beyond compare.
Symbolism
From ancient times, the ruby signified power and vitality. It has been called "the king of gemstones." It is said that warriors embedded rubies in their skin to give them courage and protection when they went into battle. The ruby was also considered to be a talisman to ward off danger, evil and even bad dreams.
Protection & Healing
Because rubies were symbols of power, emperors and kings and other members of royalty favored wearing them. It is said that rubies set in rings should be worn on the left hand for protection, and to provide the wearer with the energy to make good and wise decisions. Some sources also attribute healing powers to rubies, which are said to assist blood circulation and to detoxify the body.
Value
To some jewelers, the ruby is a gemstone more precious than a diamond because of its relative scarcity. The ruby is second to the diamond in mineral hardness, containing aluminum oxide and chrome. Vibrant red rubies, in a shade called "pigeon's blood" are the most desirable. The ruby's countries of origin include Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Tanzania, Kenya and Afghanistan.
Rarity
In a few extremely rare cases, rubies are discovered with characteristics that mean they become collectors' items and museum exhibits. They are called "star rubies" because of the six-ray stars that can be seen in the surface of the stone when it is moved, due to an optical effect called asterism. Generally, star rubies are pink or purplish-red, and not the bright red of the traditional ruby. A famous star ruby in the American Museum of Natural History in New York is the De Long Star Ruby (100.32 carats). It is named for Mrs. Edith Haggin de Long, who donated the ruby to the Museum.
Birthstone, Anniversary
For people born during the month of July, the ruby is their birthstone. This period of time bridges two astrological signs, that of Cancer (June 22 to July 23) and Leo (July 24 through August 23). The ruby is also the traditional gift for a 40th wedding anniversary. As a birthday or anniversary gift, the ruby definitely is something to smile about for its exquisite beauty when set as jewelry, and because the ruby also stands for peace and contentment.
