Graves Disease & Alcohol Consumption

Graves disease is a rate disorder that affects only about 2 percent of the population and causes hyperthyroidism and symptoms, such as rapid heartbeat, diarrhea, tremors, infertility and excess perspiration. There has been a link established between Graves disease and alcohol consumption.


Amount of Alcohol


The amount of alcohol you drink can affect the symptoms of your Graves disease. One drink, typically beer and wine, is usually safe to partake in on occasion.


Prevention


Avoid alcohol unless otherwise instructed by your doctor. If you plan to exceed the one glass maximum, talk to your doctor.


Lifestyle Factors


Other lifestyle factors along with alcohol can worsen Graves disease symptoms, like stress and smoking.


Effects


Alcohol consumption can have several adverse effects, like slower heartbeat, increased irritability, reduced immune responses and heart problems.


Warning


You should especially not drink alcohol while taking medicine for Graves disease. Drinking alcohol within an hour of taking Graves disease medication will affect the absorption.
