Clean A Pipe With Regular Salt

Keep your pipes clean with table salt

Since we use our drains everyday they tend to get clogged with hair, mineral buildup and other disposable material. Luckily there are some home remedies, including using table salt, which can efficiently clean out drains and pipes.

Salt Remedy

Salt combined with baking soda makes a great mixture to clean up some minor buildups or to maintain efficient water flow in your pipes. Mix 1/2 cup of salt with 1/2 cup of baking soda. Pour this down the drain followed by boiling water. Let it sit overnight and rinse it thoroughly before using the pipes again. This method is best for grease buildups.

Baking Soda Remedy

An alternative to salt is baking soda that is useful for harder cleanups. Combine 1/2 cup of baking soda with 1/2 cup of vinegar and pour it down the garbage disposal. Cover the opening for several hours before pouring hot water into the pipe. Use basic white or cider vinegar, not the fancier kinds that have added flavorings that might interfere with the chemical reactions between baking soda and vinegar.

General Cleaning

For general upkeep of your drains and pipes, baking soda and salt mixtures tend to work best. Combine 1/4 cup of cream of tartar, 1/2 cup of salt and 1/2 cup of baking soda in a jar. Boil water on a stove, preferably in a tea kettle for easy transportation. Pour the mixture down the drain followed by the water. Perform this once a week to maintain clean pipes.
