Metabolife Health Risks

Metabolife is one of the most popular dietary, weight loss supplements on the market due to its fat burning abilities. One of the reasons this supplement has been so effective is because of its key ingredient, ephedra. This stimulant burns fat, but in doing so, it constricts the blood vessels and stimulates the heart. Its effect has been linked to more than 100 deaths and numerous other health ailments. When considering this supplement as a means of shedding pounds, you should weigh the health risks involved.

Function

The ephedra in Metabolife works to not only suppress the appetite, but speed the body's metabolism as well. The caffeine in the supplement works to increase energy levels while prolonging the effectiveness of the ephedra.

Health Risks

Users of Metabolife can, and have, experienced increased blood pressure, heart rate, chest pain, heart attacks, strokes and death.

Causes

The ephedra stimulates the central nervous system and the heart, resulting in the aforementioned health risks. When combined with the caffeine in Metabolife, the risks are even greater.

Considerations

Metabolife states on its packaging that one should not exceed more than 90 milligrams a day of ephedra. However the FDA has currently proposed that this amount be lowered to 24 milligrams, as well as placing a ban on the ephedra/caffeine combination; these proposals are currently waiting approval.

Warning

If you choose to take Metabolife, be sure to stop consumption immediately if you experience any of the health problems previously mentioned. You will also want to visit your doctor for a check-up to ensure no severe damage has been caused.
