What Foods To Avoid To Get Rid Of Anemia

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services National Women's Health Information Center defines anemia as a condition in which the number of red blood cells decreases because of a deficiency in hemoglobin. Hemoglobin, a protein, helps transfer oxygen from the lungs to the entire body and makes blood red. When people suffer from anemia, they are often moderately or chronically lethargic. In addition to medication, diet plays a key role in fighting this disorder. Thus, various foods should be avoided to get rid of anemia.


Tea and Coffee


The National Women's Health Information Center states that drinking coffee or tea with meals reduces the body's ability to absorb the iron in foods. Instead, they recommend drinking water or vitamin C-rich beverages.


Overcooked Vegetables


Eating overcooked leafy green vegetables should be avoided to get rid of anemia because this process reduces the iron, folic acid and B12 in them. Instead, opt for raw greens or lightly steamed vegetables.


Milk


The American Academy of Family Physicians states that overconsumption of milk should be avoided to get rid of anemia. When the body has too much calcium, this blocks its ability to absorb iron, especially in children younger than age 2.


Refined Starches and Carbohydrates


Refined starches and carbohydrates like white, bleached flour, white rice and pastas should be avoided to get ride of anemia. These foods lack iron and other nutrients and lead to lethargy and fatigue.








Soy Protein


The College of Family Physicians of Canada states that soy protein should not be eaten with iron-rich foods because it blocks iron absorption.
