Deal With A Hemorrhagic Stroke

Hemorrhagic stroke means brain bleeding, caused by rupture of blood vessels in the brain. Hemorrhagic stroke can lead to death or disability for the rest of the patient's life. In the United States, there are about 150,000 new cases of hemorrhagic strokes every year. Early diagnose and treatment of hemorrhagic stroke can reduce the extent of brain damage and increase the chance of recovery.

Instructions

1. Identify the cause of hemorrhagic stroke. The major cause of hemorrhagic stroke is high blood pressure. In some cases, overdose of anticoagulant medications can also cause hemorrhagic stroke. Control blood pressure and stop any medication that may cause bleeding. The ventriculostomy tube can be used to measure the brain pressure and to drain blood collected in the brain.

2. Surgery is the best way to stop bleeding in the brain. Normally, surgery will be done within 72 hours of the stroke. In some cases, surgery is postponed until the condition of the patient stabilizes. During surgery, a clamp can be used to stop bleeding of aneurysms. Other procedures such as coil embolization and arteriovenous malformation treatment can also be used to stop bleeding.

3. Hemorrhagic stroke patients are very likely to develop blood clots during recovery, typically during the first week of recovery. Lack of movement also contributes to formation of blood clots in the legs. Stroke patients are recommended to get out of the bed and move around as much as they can to reduce the risk of developing blood clots. Medications such as heparin and anticoagulants can be used to reduce the formation of blood clots.

4. Hemorrhagic stroke patients often have difficulty in swallowing due to muscle weakness. Difficulty in swallowing increases risk of pneumonia. Physical therapy can help patients to learn to swallow again. Use a thick liquid when drinking to reduce the risk of inhaling liquid into the lung.

5. Stroke patients tend to develop bed sores since they have to lie on bed for a long time. Bed sores increase risk of infection. To reduce the risk of developing bedsores, put pillow between the ankles and between the knees. Elevate the heels. Change position as often as possible.
