Since its inception in January 2006, Medicare Part D has become an integral part of the lives of many Americans. This program, which was created under the U.S. Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003, has provided a number of benefits to its existing members.
What Is Medicare Part D?
Unlike other Medicare plans, such as part A and B, Medicare Part D is a prescription drug benefit program, or insurance, that allows U.S. citizens to obtain prescription drug coverage regardless of income, health status, and mode of coverage of their previous prescriptions.
Who Is Eligible to Enroll in Medicare Part D?
Any U.S. citizen who is enrolled in or eligible for Medicare Part A may avail themselves of Medicare Part D. Also, those who are currently enrolled in Medicare Part B may also voluntarily take advantage of this program. However, those U.S. citizens who qualify for or receive Medicaid benefits are enrolled in Medicare Part D automatically, for prescription drug coverage.
What Drugs Are Covered Under Medicare Part D?
Drugs that are covered under Medicare Part D include insulin, vaccines, and those prescription drugs approved by the FDA. Supplies associated with the injection of insulin including alcohol swabs, gauze, needles, and syringes are also covered. However, there are specific rules to be aware of. Some drugs may or may not be covered depending on the plan obtained by the member.
What Drugs Are Excluded Under Medicare Part D?
As previously mentioned, some prescription drugs are not covered in Medicare Part D; such medications include barbiturates, over-the-counter medicines, prescription vitamins and minerals, with the exception of fluoride preparations and prenatal vitamins, and benzodiazepines. Drugs used to treat impotence, fertility, anorexia, weight gain, weight loss, and those for cosmetic purposes are also not covered under this program. In addition, medications used to relieve the common cold - coughs, colds and stuffy nose - are also not covered.
What Are the Benefits of Medicare Part D?
Medicare Part D provides convenient access to pharmacies and the choice between at least two drug plans that cover both generic and brand name drugs. Medicare Part D also ensures that members or beneficiaries living in nursing homes are eligible to participate. Moreover, those who have Medicare benefits and are enrolled in full Medicaid are also eligible. Most important, Medicare Part D provides affordable prescription coverage to those of limited means.
