Defrost Cryogenic Freezers

A cryogenic freezer is a freezing device that drops the temperature of its contents to below 150 degrees Celsius. It uses a compressed gas like liquid nitrogen to achieve such low temperatures. Cryogenic freezing is frequently used industrially, when large quantities of food need to be frozen and stored for an extended period of time; it also has many medical uses. Defrosting a cryogenic freezer is not overly difficult, but it should be done carefully.

Instructions

1. Check your control panel on the freezer. Many will have an "auto-defrost" function that can be activated with the push of a button.

2. Remove any contents from the freezer to ensure an easier thaw. Wear gloves and protective gear when handling items in or around the freezer, because the extreme cold can cause skin damage.

3. Shut off the power to the freezer and close off the nitrogen tanks. Leave the door open to let the air from the room circulate into the freezer.

4. Wipe down the freezer with a thick cloth after the freezer has warmed to room temperature, to remove any remaining moisture. Large amounts of moisture can be picked up with a mop for faster drying.
