Phenylketonuria, or PKU, is a birth defect where the newborn cannot properly break down phenylalanine, an amino acid. Treatment for PKU includes a low protein diet rich in foods low in phenylalanine. Low phenylalanine milk supplements such as Sno-Pro are also recommended.
PKU
Newborns with phenylketonuria, a rare condition, are unable to digest phenylalanine, an amino acid. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, necessary for growth and muscle repair. Additionally, phenylalanine plays a role in the production of melanin, which is responsible for skin pigment.
Symptoms
Symptoms of PKU include light colored skin or hair, retardation, seizures, tremors, unusual hand positioning, jerking movements of the limbs, delayed mental and social skills, hyperactivity and rashes.
