Paddle Out In A Big Surf On A Longboard

It's important to use caution when approaching big waves.

Longboard surfing is a recreational sport that many people enjoy. Part of the appeal of surfing is catching and riding the largest waves possible. In order to do this, it's necessary to first learn paddle out to those waves. Following the proper procedure should make it possible for most surfers to safely and successfully paddle out into a big surf.

Instructions

1. Plot out the area in which you want to go in order to get to the big surf. Try to pick out the best path possible that will require the least amount of energy. Then figure out how many waves you will need to paddle through to get to your destination. You should also select an exit point to go to once the wave breaks. Doing so should make the paddling process as safe as possible and save you energy.

2. Begin paddling over the smaller waves to get to your destination. Lay on top of your longboard with your stomach facing down. Keep the nose of your longboard facing straight and paddle as fast as possible.

3. Hold onto the sides of your longboard and keep it close to your chest as you propel yourself over each wave. Push up and over each wave when you hit the crest.

4. Push downward once you are over each wave. Try to keep your longboard straight and keep paddling as fast as possible. Keep repeating this process until you start reaching larger waves.

5. Perform a maneuver called the Eskimo roll once you are out in the big surf. Since it's difficult to push over large waves, this technique is extremely helpful. In order to Eskimo roll, you should keep your longboard facing straight into each wave. Then as the wave approaches you should grab the sides of your longboard at around shoulder level.

6. Flip your longboard over until you are underwater. Hold your breath and hold on tightly to your board. At this point you will be upside down and underneath your longboard. Doing so will minimize your energy loss to get over each wave.

7. Allow the wave to crash over you and flip yourself back over. Repeat this process and continue paddling until you reach your destination.
