Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is also known as Stein-Levanthal syndrome, and is an hormonal disease that brings upon a number of symptoms, such as obesity, acne and no menstrual periods. It is an endocrine disorder and about 5 percent of all females have the condition at one point throughout their lives. A lot of women who have polycystic ovarian syndrome develop ovarian cysts as a result of the disease.
Ovarian Cysts
A lot of women who have polycystic ovarian syndrome experience ovarian cysts as one of their symptoms. Ovarian cysts are sacs that are filled up with fluid. Ovarian cysts form either on or inside of the ovaries, and the most frequently encountered are functional cysts.
Functional Cysts
There are two different types of functional cysts that women who have polycystic ovarian cancer often have. These two cyst types are corpus lyteum cysts (cysts that form if sacs do not properly dissolve) and also follicle cysts (cysts that come about if the sac doesn't break apart and release an egg).
Types
There are various other types of ovarian cysts that women who have polycystic ovarian syndrome might experience. Some of these cyst types include dermoid cysts, endometriomas, polycystic ovaries (this type of ovarian cyst is actually very common with polycystic ovarian syndrome patients as well) and cystadenomas.
Symptoms
If you have polycystic ovarian syndrome and want to know if you indeed are experiencing an ovarian cyst, some symptoms to look out for include pain, swelling or pressure in the abdomen, pelvic aching, weight gain, pain during sexual intercourse, painful urination, difficulty with urination, vomiting, nausea, breast tenderness, menstrual period pain and many others.
Prevention/Solution
If you want to know whether you do have an ovarian cyst that could be a sign of polycystic ovarian syndrome, you can test it out in various ways. These methods include ultrasounds, blood tests, hormone level tests and pregnancy tests. However, ovarian cysts are often initially discovered during normal pelvic exams.
