Hearing Aid Problems

It is estimated that 10 percent of the population suffers some sort of hearing impairment and needs hearing devices. Hearing aids have become smaller, less noticeable and overall better at helping a person hear. However, some problems can arise and many are easily remedied.

Background Noises

There is almost always some background noise when using a hearing aid. Digital hearing aids, especially those with FM options, can effectively reduce background noise and static.

Considerations

Some people may have problem with drainage and this may prevent them from wearing a hearing aid. Hearing aids and their batteries can be tiny and may present difficulty to those who have trouble handling very small and intricate devices.

Soreness and Tenderness

If the outside ear or the ear canal becomes red, sore and tender it most likely is because the hearing aid is too small or too big. Fit and comfort are extremely important.

Noise When Chewing

When the jaw moves, there is also movement in the ear canal. A hearing aid that does not fit properly or does not rest deeply enough in the canal may be affected by jaw movement and chewing. Proper fit and venting will remedy this.

Battery Life

Some hearing aid batteries last several days while others will last several weeks. When the battery has become spent or is weak, sounds and hearing will not be heard at an optimal level.

Water

Getting stuck in a rainstorm or working up a good sweat will not likely cause damage to a hearing aid. However, a hearing aid that has become soaked may be damaged. Dry aid kits are available to help keep excess moisture out.
