Crutch Tips For Snow

Walking through snow is always difficult, particularly if you are using crutches.

Walking over uneven pavement, climbing stairs and even getting up from the couch can be difficult when you have to use crutches. Walking with crutches is especially challenging for those who live in a region prone to excessive snowfall. Trying to maneuver through snow-covered sidewalks and streets can be dangerous on crutches, so take the proper precautions to ensure your safety. Some tips for walking through snow with crutches include bringing a friend, wearing sturdy boots, watching the weather forecast, avoiding stairs and installing special tips to the ends of your crutches.

Bring a Friend

Having a friend walk next to you during snowy days can be very useful if you are walking with crutches. Your friend can help prevent you from taking a dangerous fall by steadying you if you begin to feel unbalanced. If you need to drive somewhere during a snowy day, your friend can help you get out of your vehicle. Having someone around to open entrance doors and spot you if you need to climb up or down snow-covered stairs can be very helpful as well.

Wear Sturdy Boots

Wearing a sturdy pair of snow boots may seem unimportant if you are walking with crutches. However, boots with good tread will help your feet get a better grip on the snowy ground. Your uninjured foot will need this extra grip to prevent it from slipping and possibly causing you to fall.

Watch The Forecast

If the weather forecast is predicting precipitation the day you are planning to leave the house, consider postponing your outing for safety's sake. Freshly fallen snow can be especially slippery, adding to the danger of walking with crutches. If the forecast suggests snow is likely and you cannot change your plans, try taking a friend along.

Avoid Stairs

Stairs present a special challenge to those walking with crutches. When stairs are covered in snow, they can be even more dangerous. If possible, use the disabled-accessible entrance into buildings. This will enable you to avoid the stairs, preventing a possibly painful fall.

Install Special Tips

Many companies sell tips for the ends of your crutches that can help you better maneuver through the snow. These tips have specially designed grips that will add safety and traction to your walk over snow-covered ground. Tips such as these may also be available at your local drugstore.
