Pink is for girls... or is it?
The color pink is a combination red and white. The results range from soft pastel tones of baby pink to shockingly bright magenta and fuchsia. Pink decorations and adornments are often used during the months of spring, and for romantic events, such as weddings or Valentine's Day. As a result, people tend to associate the color pink with feelings of happiness and affection.
Gender
In Western cultures, pink is a feminine color. New mothers swaddle baby girls in pink blankets, and fashionable young women dress in pink ensembles; the international emblem for the battle against breast cancer is a piece of pink ribbon. However, it was not always this way. Prior to the 1900s, pink was considered a masculine color, as it was so closely related to red. Blue, on the other hand, was thought to be more delicate and feminine and was, therefore, considered an appropriate color for girls.
Romance
Mixing white with any color results in a pastel version of the original. Pastel hues, such as pink, are less commanding than their original colors. This may be why pure red is associated with passionate love, while pink is thought of as the color of kindness, sweetness, tenderness and caring. The unspoken language of color should be kept in mind when choosing things like flowers; a bouquet of ruby red roses sends an entirely different message than a bouquet of pastel pink ones, though an assortment of hot pink flowers can bridge the gap between these two, as the vivid hue suggests both playfulness and passion.
Psychology
Whether you realize it or not, the colors that surround you have an immediate and profound impact on your disposition, temperament, emotional state, appetite and energy level. The color pink tends to bring on feelings of inner tranquility, peace and relaxation. In fact, it is so effective at neutralizing disorder, it is often used to paint the walls in jail cells and psychiatric wards; the color helps keep erratic individuals calm and under control. In sports, coaches have been known to paint the walls of the visiting team's locker room pink to reduce their aggression, tilting the scales in favor of the home team.
New Age
Those who use crystals for therapeutic reasons choose pink gemstones, such as rose quartz or pink sapphires, to increase feelings of contentment, self-respect and confidence, and to guard against unwarranted attacks, anger and hostility. Those who practice feng shui incorporate pink into the design scheme of their home when they wish to improve the quality of a romantic relationship.
