Avoid Foods That Trigger Lactose Intolerance

Being lactose intolerant is not only painful, but it can also be inconvenient as well. Just shopping for groceries can become a hassle when you need to avoid foods that contain dairy products. Thankfully, there are a few steps you can follow to make sure you avoid foods that may irritate your condition.

Instructions

1. Carefully read the ingredients label. There are several foods that contain dairy. Many of these foods may not even seem like they would need dairy products to be produced. That's why it's essential to read this label. Many manufacturers will actually list, in bold print, that the product contains milk and dairy products.

2. Look for alternatives. There are several alternatives available for people who are lactose intolerant. Many of these products are made with soy. There are other alternatives that are made lactose-free. A great example is lactose-free ice cream. One popular brand actually adds lactase enzymes to their product. People who are lactose intolerant lack this enzyme, which is essential for breaking down lactose.

3. Just ask. Whether you're eating in a restaurant or buying from a bakery or deli, ask if there are any dairy products used in the making of the product. With more and more people suffering from food allergies, cashiers and wait staff are more informed about what is in the products they sell.
