Treat A Sinus Infection For A Toddler

Sinuses are empty spaces within the bones of the face and skull that fill with mucus when they are irritated. Sinus infections are common in children and are closely related to asthma. They both affect the nasal cavities and are considered inflammatory conditions. The symptoms of a sinus infection are tenderness in the face, fever, loss of smell, thick yellowish mucus and bad breath. Treating a toddler for sinus infections can be simple if the infection has not been present for more than two weeks. If the infection gets worse and does not go away, see your child's pediatrician.

Instructions

Treat A Sinus Infection For A Toddler

1. Give the toddler plenty of fluids. Water is the best choice. It helps to lubricate the mucus membranes. You can also give your toddler Pedialyte. Pedialyte contains electrolytes, vitamins and minerals that will help the immune system fight off infections and bacteria.

2. Ask your child's pediatrician for a portable breathing machine, so you can administer breathing treatments to your toddler at home. This will help to clear her nasal passages. To administer the breathing treatments, turn on the machine and place the attached mask over your toddler's mouth and nose for about 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the severity of the infection.

3. Help to remove excess mucus by giving your toddler a nasal wash. This involves lubricating the nasal cavity with either a saline solution or warm water. Repeat nasal washes at least four times a day or whenever breathing becomes difficult.

4. Administer antibiotics if your toddler's symptoms persist. A high fever, severe facial pain and headaches are signs that your toddler will need antiobiotics. Be sure to consult your toddler's pediatrician regarding medications.
