Braided Dreads Hairstyles

For many people, dreadlocks are a self-expression of style, culture, dedication to religion and lifestyle, or freedom and creativity. Any type of hair can be cultivated into dreads--from fine and straight, curly, to kinky, but a person's hair grade will determine the method of achieving dreads and how long it will take them to grow. The versatility dreadlocks present really determines the many different styles achieved with these natural locks.

Prepping the Hair

The basics are important so hair must be clean and fragrance-free when creating dreadlocks. Not following these procedures could prevent locking and cause dandruff. You do not need short hair to begin dreadlocks, which is a common misconception. Create uniformly square sections for dread size with no spaces. Each section should be at least one-inch in pencil diameter. Rubberband the base of each section down as you go along. Spray hairt with a natural dreadlock spray. , keeping it away from scalp.

Twist and Pin

This technique works best on hair three to six inches in length. Section hair into desired lock size, twisting it into little balls while lightly applying natural dreadlock wax. Secure hair with clips to hold hair down. It will take about six months to lock up.

Brush Rubbing

Works best in hair three to six inches in length. Brush the in a circular clockwise motion around the head. Manipulate hair into little dread balls. This create more natural parts in your hair and smaller dreadlocks. Hair should be conditioned lightly with dreadlock wax regularly.

Finger Twisting

Hair three inches or longer is twisted repeatedly between fingers. Beginning with the brush rubbing method helps part hair naturally, twisting all along. Spray lightly with locking accelerator. Allow to dry completely, and twisting a little, more add dreadlock wax. After six months of following this process weekly, dreads will resemble small twisted dreads.

Neglected Natural

The easiest method to achieve dreadlocks, it requires little maintenance because the hair is usually not washed, combed, or brushed, but left to mat. This can cause considerable damage to hair. Dandruff can result, and this techniqe can lead to lice or insect infestation because of improper hair care. Hair can be any length and takes up to two years to lock

Hair Care Maintenance

A misconception is that people with dreadlocks do not wash their hair. Proper hair care depends greatly upon a person washing, deep conditioning, oiling, and trimming their dreads every couple of weeks. Washing hair is not encouraged the first month so hair will mat and lock, but using a natural herbal spray is recommended to cleanse scalp (patting with damp cloth) so head will not get itchy. Your lock size will always determine how long it takes you create a style, but, remember, smaller locks will increase your styling capability as hair grows out.
