Bring children along to hippie festivals and concerts and outfit them in hippie styles. Children look cute in nearly everything, so be creative and choose outfits that allow them to run, dance, play and get dirty. Homemade, reused and organic clothing are prized in hippie circles, so stick with these.
Overalls
Children look adorable in overalls. For a music festival or other hippie-style event, don't bother with a shirt underneath or shoes (assuming it's safe to walk around without shoes). Think Huck Finn and let your girl or boy run around with worn-in overalls. For added flair, sew on some patches, especially rainbows and flowers.
Homemade dresses
If you can sew, you can easily craft a simple dress with straps (don't bother with sleeves) to pull over your child's head. Make sure it's not too long so they can run around without tripping. Use simple calico fabrics or material from old adult dresses, sheets, tablecloths or anything else you can find. The child will be getting the clothes dirty running around and will outgrow them quickly so don't bother with double hemming or other niceties.
You can purchase homemade dresses at street art fairs and festivals that cater to hippies, and other festivals such as Bonnaroo, Rothbury, Michigan Womyn's Music Festival or Burning Man.
Turn jeans into bell-bottoms
You can sew a triangular piece of corduroy or calico into the seam of a pair of jeans. This will turn the jeans into bell-bottom pants and add a delightful touch of creativity and color. Finish the hem at the bottom to preserve the jeans or add a store-bought patch anywhere on the jeans.
Hippie Shirts
Outfit children in T-shirts emblazoned with hippie icons such as Jim Morrison, Jerry Garcia or Jimi Hendrix, or with hippie slogans. Look for shirts with peace symbols, rainbows, butterflies, environmental messages or favorite hippie bands on them. Stick with organic cotton to remain consistent with hippie values.
