Collision repair technicians, also referred to as automotive body repairers, repair damaged automobiles. This can include minor damage such as a small scrape or dent and major damage caused by an accident. In May 2009, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported average salaries for this occupation based on an estimated 133,290 collision repair technicians employed in the United States.
Qualifications
Although most employers require a high school diploma or GED, most collision repair technicians obtain training from a vocational program. Certification is available from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, where collision repair technicians can obtain the Master Collision Repair and Refinish Technicians credential.
Salary
The annual median salary of a collision repair technician was $37,980 per year, the BLS' 2009 data said. The 25th percentile earned $29,620 per year and the 75th percentile earned $50,020 per year. Median hourly wages were $18.26 per hour. The 25th percentile earned $14.24 per hour and the 75th percentile earned $24.05 per hour.

They work in a variety of industries, including motor vehicle manufacturing, automotive parts, accessories and tire stores, automotive repair and maintenance. The highest concentration of workers was in the automotive repair and maintenance industry, where collision repair technicians earned an annual mean wage of $40,350 or $19.40 per hour. Annual mean wage of those working for automobile dealers was $43,390 or $20.86 per hour. The highest wages were in the spectator sports and courier/express delivery services industries, where collision repair technicians earned an annual mean wage of $56,980 or $27.40 per hour.
Geography
The highest concentration of collision repair technicians was in Flint, Mich., where the annual mean wage was $33,470 or $16.90 per hour. The highest wages were in the Lawrence/Methuen/Salem, Mass./N.H. division, where annual mean wage was $60,180 or $28.93 per hour. In Reading, Pa., annual mean wage was $40,430 or $19.44 per hour, and in Napa, Ca., annual mean wage was $59,420 or $20.57 per hour.
