Pharmaceutical compounding provides medical solutions for patients with special needs.
Pharmacy technicians and compounding pharmacy technicians assist licensed pharmacists with filling prescriptions. However, a compounding pharmacy technician is trained in the area of safely mixing drugs to meet the specific health needs of patients. For example, there are certain medications that are available only in adult dosages. When there is a child who can benefit from that particular medication, a compounding pharmacy technician can extract a dosage from that medication that's appropriate for that child. If you are seeking a career in this field, you may obtain compounding certification through the National Pharmacy Technician Association (NPTA).
Instructions
1. Acquire pharmacy technician training. Some aspiring technicians either attend pharmacy technician training programs offered by community colleges or vocational schools. Others obtain on-the-job training. Based on the education path that you choose, it can take anywhere from three months to two years to complete training.
2. Take the compounding certification course offered by the National Pharmacy Technician Association (NPTA). This is a home-study course that includes reading assignments and multiple exams. Passing the exams requires a minimum score of 70 percent.
3. Complete the NPTA pharmaceutical compounding training program. The two-day, hands-on training takes place at the NPTA Training Institute in Houston, Texas. Contact the NPTA to obtain the course study and to make arrangements for attending the training institute.
