Fix A Leaking Ball Faucet

Repair ball faucets in several steps.

Kitchen sinks often feature ball faucets. This type of faucet has a single lever that operates a ball valve to open and close hot and cold water valves, controlling water temperature.

While the one handle means convenience, these faucets do spring leaks. When the cartridge inside wears down, water finds its way out of the faucet and onto your counter top. If you have the right tools and proper replacement parts, the repair is fairly simple.

Instructions

1. Shut off the water supply. Loosen the Allen nut under the faucet handle and slide the handle off the faucet.

2. Loosen the cap under the handle. Turn it to the left with your hands and a rag or towel for extra grip. Grip the cap with large pliers and turn if necessary. Remove the cap.

3. Take out the ball inside the faucet. Use the tip of a screwdriver to lift the two seals out of the holes in the faucet head. Slide the O-ring off the faucet body by hand.

4. Insert the new seals into the valves in the bottom of the faucet. Press them into place with the screwdriver or the tip of your finger. Put the new O-ring around the faucet and replace the ball valve.

5. Place the cap back on the faucet and twist it tightly with the pliers. Slide the handle onto the ball valve rod, insert the Allen nut and tighten it.

Tips Warnings

Tape the end of the pliers to protect the finish on the cap.

The seals, O-ring and ball valve are available at a hardware store or plumber's supply shop.

Make sure the ball valve is compatible with the faucet's make and model.
