Patio Grill Ideas

Find the best grill for your cooking needs.

Cooking on your patio can be enjoyable year round with the right equipment. Whether you decide to build a permanent patio cooking center with all the bells and whistles or opt for a traditional charcoal or propane gas grill will depend on your budget and how much you plan to use your patio grill.

You probably have some ideas as to what your grilling activity will be. With a little research, you can find the patio grilling solution that is right for you.

Open Charcoal Grills

Open charcoal grilling works great for cooking burgers.

Cooking food outside on a charcoal grill is an American tradition. There are many sizes and shapes of charcoal grills available and care should be taken when purchasing one. If all you prefer is to occasionally grill a few burgers or hot dogs, a simple steel hibachi grill will do. For more elaborate cooking there are better solutions and some things you should consider.

There are two basic types of grill cooking. Direct grilling is cooking food right over the coals and is most often done on hibachi or less expensive brazier grills. Indirect cooking is the better way with food cooked away from the burning coals.

Kettle Grills

Cook your favorite fish on a kettle grill.

A kettle type grill is a good choice for cooking nearly any type of meat or fish. The larger size allows the coals to be placed on one side and the food cooks on the opposite side of the grill.

The cover on the grill allows the smoke flavor to better penetrate the food as it cooks and your meat can be cooked slowly so that it retains juices and tenderness. This type of grill takes up little space and can be stored out of the way when not needed.

Propane Gas Grills

You can easily adjust the cooking temperature on a propane gas grill.

Propane gas grills are a popular choice for patio cooking. According to GasGrill.org, prices can range from $100 to $1500 depending on the options you choose. These grills are often built into a rolling cart and offer many advantages for patio cooking.

Unlike charcoal grills, the gas grill ignites with the push of a button. Cooking temperature is adjustable and some models have separate cooking areas for charcoal cooking. Propane grills cook evenly with very little cleanup. There are also gas grills that come with range top burners for cooking sauces or side dishes.

Some of the more expensive models are built like outdoor cooking centers with plenty of storage space for seasonings and utensils. You can comfortably cook a meal for a group or just a few people on a propane gas grill. ?
