Get Grease Off a Pizza Stone
Pizza stones are a great way to get a crisp, well-done crust for homemade pizza. These stones are made of ceramic, which is a porous material that must be cleaned differently than regular bakeware. Pizza stones will absorb soap and dishwashing liquid and release it into a pizza the next time the stone is used. Great care must be taken to clean the stone without chemical products. It is not necessary to keep your pizza stone looking brand new as some discoloration and stains on a pizza stone is normal. Many people believe that a well-used stone produces the best-tasting pizza.
Instructions
1. Let the pizza stone cool completely to room temperature before attempting to clean it. A rapid change from hot to cold can cause pizza stones to crack.
2. Use a scraping tool (like a spatula) or bristle brush to remove any stuck-on bits of crust or toppings that remain on the stone.
3. Use a clean damp sponge or paper towel to wipe the pizza stone down.
4. Allow the stone to soak in warm water for a half an hour to make sure it is completely saturated. Do not add soap.
5. Set the pizza stone in a dish-drying rack and allow to air dry.
Tips Warnings
Avoid placing a cold pizza stone in a hot oven, as the stone may crack. Instead, allow the pizza stone to sit inside the oven while it preheats. Do not use grease or oil when cooking on your pizza stone. Cornmeal may be used to prevent the pizza crust from sticking to the stone if needed.
Never put a pizza stone in the dishwasher, as the dishwashing cleaner will be absorbed into the stone and released into the crust of pizzas that are baked later on.
