Body Brushing Techniques For Cellulite

According to Dr. Denice Moffat, body brushing, also known as dry brushing, was created by Finnish Dr. Paavo Airola almost 30 years ago. The body brushing technique is popular in European spas and cancer treatment centers.

Significance

Body brushing has been thought by some to assist in cellulite removal from trouble spots. The idea behind body brushing is that it speeds up the lymphatic system, thus speeding the removal of toxins from the body. An active lymphatic system is associated with improved skin appearance. The skin is the largest detoxifying organ of the body and performs one quarter of the body's detoxification every day. With the assistance of body brushing, the detoxifying actions of the skin are improved.

Function

Body brushing has several functions aside from cellulite removal. Dry brushing stimulates the flow of blood, assisting with the removal of toxins from the body. The act of brushing removes dead skin cells to reveal a healthy glow. Once dead skin cells are removed, new skin cells are encouraged to regenerate. Sebum secretion is also produced.

Technique

A brush with natural bristles, preferably goat or boar hair, is the best tool for body brushing. A brush with a handle is optimal to access hard-to-reach areas of the body. Skin brushing should be done on dry skin daily. The best way to progress is from the feet upward in a rhythmic, circular pattern. The brush passes over the lower legs, progressing to the buttocks and upward toward the chest. The entire process of dry brushing should take between three and five minutes to complete.

Effects

Dry brushing is associated with cellulite removal by cleansing of the lymphatic system. Lymph, a colorless body fluid produced by the lymphatic system, is composed mainly of white blood cells and acts as a cleanser by removing waste products from the body. Dry brushing stimulates the lymphatic system and speeds up the waste removal process.
