Replace Rocker Arms On A 1991 Acura Legend

The rocker arm on the Acura Legend converts radial motion from the camshaft to linear motion, which operates the valves as the engine is running. When there are problems with the rocker arms, you need to determine the cause. Sometimes a rapid ticking sound will result because the engine oil is too low; another problem that could cause the ticking noise is a broken rocker arm. If you have broken rocker arms you need to replace them immediately to avoid severe damage to the engine.

Instructions

1. Open the engine compartment of the Acura and disconnect the battery using a wrench to loosen the terminal nut. Remove the cover from the timing belt using a socket and ratchet. Remove the cylinder head cover using a socket and ratchet. Rotate the crankshaft using a wrench to bring the shaft to top dead center of the number one piston. This is where the timing marks line up on the crankshaft and the engine block.

2. Remove the timing belt using a wrench to release the tension from the belt tensioner. Remove the camshaft sprockets using a socket and ratchet to loosen the bolts. Hold the other end of the camshaft with a wrench to keep it from turning when you loosen the bolts. Remove the bearing caps from the camshaft using a socket and ratchet. Turn each bolt only two turns in a pattern that crisscrosses to prevent damaging any of the parts.

3. Be sure to note the proper location of each bearing cap using a marker and masking tape. It is essential that each one goes back in the same place. Carefully lift each camshaft from the cylinder head. Label the location of each one since they also have to go back in the same way they came out. Remove the affected rocker arms by loosening the bolts with a socket and ratchet. Lubricate the new rocker arms and put them in place of the old ones.

4. Install the bolt to the rocker arm for each one you had to replace and torque it to 9 ft-lbs. Place the camshafts on the cylinder head in their respective places. Install the bearing caps. Tighten the bolts two turns at a time with a socket and ratchet in a crisscrossing pattern. Install the camshaft sprockets using a socket and ratchet to tighten the bolts. Hold the camshaft still using a wrench while you tighten the bolts.

5. Install the timing belt. Add tension to the belt using a wrench to turn the tensioner. Place the timing belt cover on the engine and tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet. Install the valve cover and tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet. Connect the negative cable to the battery and tighten the terminal nut with a wrench.

Tips Warnings

Do not attempt to complete this project when the engine is hot or serious burns will result.
