Make A Seashell And Sand Encrusted Picture Frame

Encrusting a picture frame with treasures from the beach is a fun way to remember your vacation.

If a picture of your beach vacation is worth a thousand words, how much is a picture frame that looks just like the beach worth? Encrustation is a method of combining a grainy substance such as sand with a glue-like binder to allow it to be painted onto a solid surface. A picture frame, some sand, a few shells and pieces of sea glass are combined to make this conversation piece.

Instructions

1. Cover the surface of your work area with waxed paper. Combine equal amounts of the sand with the gel medium in the plastic container. Mix them together with the plastic spoon until they form a thick paste. For a 5- by 7-inch frame, make about a cup of mixture. Make less for a smaller frame and more for a larger frame.

2. Remove the glass from the picture frame and set it aside. Lay the frame flat on the work surface. Spread a layer of the sand mixture about 1/2-inch thick onto the front of the frame with the back of the plastic spoon or the foam brush. Make it as textured as you want; it does not have to be perfectly smooth.

3. Arrange a selection of shells, pebbles and sea glass on top of the sand mixture in a pleasing design. Press them gently into the sand mixture. If you would like some of the items to look as though they are partially buried in the sand, spread a little more of the sand mixture over the top of them.

4. Keep the frame flat on the waxed paper and set aside in an undisturbed place to dry. This may take several days. Initially, the gel medium will appear cloudy or translucent. This is normal. When it is completely dry, it will appear clear.

Discard the plastic container, spoon and foam brush.

Tips Warnings

A flat-surfaced frame will work best, but is not essential.

Frames may be painted before applying the sand. Make sure the paint is completely dry first.

Do not rinse or wash the container, brush or spoon in the sink, because the sand may damage your plumbing.
